One of the main reasons we love what we do at Fiat Wealth Management is when we are finally able to see our clients enjoy their retirement!
Please meet Gloria and Joel, who are longtime Fiat clients. In January 2020, they were able to take the trip of a lifetime to Ghana...read their exciting story below!
We had an unbelievable opportunity to visit Ghana, the country closest to the intersection of Longitude 0 and Latitude 0. Consequently, Ghanians call it ‘The Center of the World.’ We were provided with an expert-led historical, cultural, and epicurean tour. The following are some of the highlights of our amazing tour that left us with lasting memories...
We toured Elmina and Cape Coast Castles (UNESCO World Heritage Sites) which are among about 40 slave castles built along the Ghanaian coast that served as prisons and a departure point for African slaves to the Americas.
Another UNESCO site was a village that is unique in all of Ghana - the 400-year-old stilt, propped over water, settlement of Nzulezu, home to hundreds of people. The most striking feature that catches the eye at Nzulezo are the wooden dwellings hanging five feet above the lake level.
We also visited the Bawaleshie Elementary and Middle School and interacted with the kids who acted like they had never seen “white skin” before and wanted to rub the white paint from our skin! The school rooms were extremely crowded, air conditioning consisted of open shutters and doors, and one pencil was shared among the four students sitting at any desk!
There were many noticeable culture differences, such as;
Upon leaving the airport, there were countless numbers of people carrying items on their heads such as beverages, fruit, and even large bags of TP and were zigzagging in and out of congested traffic.
Accra was remarkably similar to any large metropolitan city. However, in many rural areas, if lucky, one light bulb provided light to the small home or road-side stand. Some lacked running water. Traffic outside of Accra was chaotic, with no traffic signs or lights. Potholes controlled the speed of traffic and tire suppliers earned a decent income. A big laugh occurred when we noticed two young men, standing in the middle of a highway with a wheelbarrow and two shovels asking for money to repair the highway!! No other tools or equipment.
Traveling is an adventure...retirement is a joy!
