A sports injury is typically one of the worst things to ever happen to a D1 athlete. But if you ask Scott Airey, he might say it was - to use his word - “fate.” Scott suffered nerve issues and ligament damage in his arm while playing D1 baseball at the University of Northern Iowa, so he turned to training other top-tier athletes like himself. It was through his coaching abilities and natural financial wherewithal that one of his friends in the financial industry took notice. He thought Scott would make a fantastic advisor. A decade later, it looks like that friend was absolutely right.
Now, Scott serves as a deeply trusted and respected advisor at Fiat Wealth Management, but his journey to get here begins about 1,000 miles away in Montreal, where he was born and raised. In the land of hockey, Scott flourished in a different sport: baseball. His talents brought him to the United States, “the best country in the world”, according to Scott. And for him, it really was. Despite his setback with his injury, it was here where he met and fell in love with his future wife and “made [his] own path” to forge a successful career in the financial industry. And, of course, he eventually became an indispensable member of the Fiat team and an invaluable resource to so many families seeking his guidance.
In his words, Scott describes himself as an advisor as “one you can trust, that has just as much passion about your future as you do.” It’s evident that Scott cares deeply about his clients and, in his own words, "absolutely loves" what he does. He says sometimes he even cares too much and explains that the personal and professional challenges he has experienced in his career have continually pushed him to grow beyond his wildest imagination. In his estimation, this is what sets Fiat apart from other firms and why he is so passionate about his work here. He describes the team at Fiat as a group of over-achievers who strive to be at “the top of the class.” As he describes, it’s something about “the atmosphere at Fiat that feels different”. The atmosphere he refers to as one that fosters empathy, hard work, and a desire for excellence that Scott says challenges him in a sometimes-painful and always-rewarding way. This is in addition to the fact that being a former D1 athlete means that Scott is naturally competitive. It is with that spirit that he continually finds himself striving to become the best of the best.
But above all, Scott loves helping people achieve their dreams, retire successfully, and provide financial wisdom to the families he works with. “That's why I do what I do,” he says, “I have that passion to help people pursue their financial goals and take care of their families for today and tomorrow…by teaching them how to build tax-efficient wealth so they can enjoy what they have worked so hard to earn.” And this is exactly what Scott does every day. It’s clear that he has a truly supportive relationship with each and every one of his clients. He doesn’t just provide financial solutions, plans, or advice – all of which is very important and very fitting of a “Type-A” personality, he says – but he also shares his warmth, humor, and true empathy with everyone he works with. Scott is the kind of advisor you could call at any time during the day and ask a question, tell a story, or get a laugh from one of his witty jokes. For Scott’s clients, this is just what they need.
Now, Scott lives in Maple Grove, MN with his wife, three children, and two dogs. Like many of us here at Fiat, he is overwhelmingly excited about the future of the firm. At the same time, it is the team here at Fiat that is just as excited for Scott – to see all of the families he will help and to witness the growth he strives for every day. There is no doubt that the combination of Fiat and Scott Airey is a personal and professional home run.
