It was relatively quickly into his military career that Daniel Colvin was using his own financial wherewithal to help his fellow soldiers manage their money When speaking with us for this article he said: “I think a lot of people in this country struggle with personal finances taking care of paychecks, budgeting, savings and really coming up with a plan to manage all of that.” He realized how powerful money management can be, saying: “I saw firsthand saw in the army as a leader that if you don't help people take care of their finances and control their finances, ultimately finances could start to control YOU.” On top of being an Army Captain, he found himself helping soldiers with tasks like creating a budget and savings plan as well as starting to put money away for college. And he was quite impactful in the lives of those he helped. This would come to be the dawn of Danny’s future (very successful) career as a Private Wealth Manager.
Here at Fiat, we constantly hear about how happy his clients are with Danny, as evidenced by any reviews you can find on the Firm that seem to constantly mention their appreciation of him. But before he was helping families to reach their financial goals, he said the road to becoming a military leader and then a top financial advisor was actually paved by something else – hockey.
He grew up playing competitive hockey and was eventually recruited to WestPoint where he played D1. It was this very experience that he says “has shaped who I am today and shaped how I communicate with families.” He goes on to say, “When you grow up playing on teams you learn to talk with and walk with and work with just about anybody by finding efficient ways to communicate.”
Luckily for Fiat, it was this unorthodox path that led him to the firm, where he helps families every single day. When asked about his experience helping families retire successfully, he says, “I think a lot of people that we end up meeting and talking to at Fiat never knew that this side of planning existed. They never knew that the spending side of retirement was so different than the advice they were currently getting, or different from the habits they’ve implemented for the last 30 years of their life.” Daniel says some families come to him just to get a “second opinion” which he is always happy to help with. “I just think there's no downside risk to that.” He says. “The way we see it we're not gonna charge you to show you how we can help you…for a lot of those situations it's a second opinion that that person or family can take with them to start implementing changes on their own or take back to their current advisor.” But, Danny points out, “sometimes that second opinion turns into a [long-term] relationship, [beause] now they've opened their eyes to a whole side of planning that they haven't gotten before.” While Danny credits his hockey and military careers with teaching him discipline and effective communication, his life was also vastly impacted and influenced positively by the love of his life and wife, Lauren, and his beloved dog, Gunnar.
This is just the beginning of a long and fruitful financial career for Danny, where he’s already set records and achieved incredible things here at Fiat. We can honestly say that when it comes to Daniel Colvin, can’t wait to see what he does next.
